unreal views
Another short and sweet note since this week it’s all about the views! Sprite checks a local hike off her Summer 2025 list and shares it with you.
Black Canyon Lake
When invited on an epic hike, you don’t say “no, thanks.”
Rather than taking the day to review the Women’s Wilderness Weekend for your reading pleasure I skipped out with a friend to check off the #1 hike on our list this summer. Black Canyon Lake is a local favorite. Any guesses on why?
The first five miles of soft trail meanders along a creek at such a miniscule incline that you don’t realize it’s not quite flat. You’re too busy being enamored with the roar of the snow melt off crashing over rocks to notice anyway. Then, the final mile (well, it was supposed to be just over a mile but I can’t be trusted) pick up in elevation to deposit you at a boulder field. If you get too excited at your proximity to the lake like we did and decide to scramble it is NOT the same distance as simply taking the trail. Don’t be fooled.
Scrambling may not have been a wise post sinus/inner ear infection recovery hike, in case you’re wondering. Worth it though? Absolutely. LOOK AT THAT JEWEL TONE!! No regrets. Even if I lie on the ground all day tomorrow. I will never forget this hike. More please and thank you.
Until I revisit it at the end of the summer and trail run it effortlessly. In the meantime, I’ll compare my pictures to the mural at the Black Canyon Bistro while enjoying their live music. And you, my dear adventure buddy, will enjoy one more look too, which just so happened to be a shot of my first glimpse at the lake. So if you visit and don’t mind a 13mi trek, let’s go take a peek together!
